I became the pastor of a small church at the age of 21—and soon discovered that I had a lot to learn. Fortunately, I was just wise enough to realize I needed to do something about it. Around that time, I discovered the teachings of John Maxwell, then the pastor of the largest church in our denomination and one of the most influential churches in the country. I bought his first book in 1985 and have followed his leadership training and coaching for nearly four decades. John’s mentorship—both direct and through his writings—has shaped my journey profoundly.

Over the years, I’ve served not only as a successful pastor but also as a business leader and director of a nonprofit organization. I’ve been honored to lead two Executive Branch Agencies under appointments from two different Governors. I believe leadership is influence—nothing more, nothing less. That belief guided me as I served nine years in the Georgia General Assembly, where I earned respect across party lines and built meaningful relationships at both the state and national levels.

I was chosen to co-chair one of the committees developing the national School Discipline Consensus Report, sponsored by the Justice Center of the Council of State Governments, and was one of only two state leaders selected to serve on the Congressionally established Charles Colson Task Force on Federal Corrections.

Internationally, I was invited to speak on religious freedom at a parliamentary roundtable in Romania.
